Basil basil! Well, I don’t know much about basil but I know they taste great when prepared fresh! On this post, I’m going to show you to do grow basil indoors 🙂
Pasta Basilico is one of my family’s comfort food which my wife learned to cook when we where living in Shanghai, China. It was so easy to find and you can have it anytime. It is served in restaurants, hotels, and the best part is my wife prepares it fresh!
After moving to Canada, my family craved for some Pasta Basilico. Months passed until one day, we saw a pot of fresh Basil in the supermarket! We bought it and at last we had some freshly prepared Basil pasta!
I decided to try and grow basil indoors because of the long winters here in Alberta, Canada so I can have a year round supply of fresh Basil. I took the easiest and fastest route by growing Basil from cuttings instead of starting from seeds.
Things Needed to Grow Basil Indoors :
- A stem of Basil (You can buy a pot of basil or simply ask a neighbor to give you some :0))
- Small container or cup
- Potting Soil (I used Miracle-Gro in doing this project)
1. Cut your basil
Cut about 3-4 inches stem just above a leaf node which has at least 2 leaves on it. Prepare as many basil cuttings as possible. I usually give my Basil a good watering after cutting or pruning it.
2. Prepare your basil cuttings
Now it’s time to prepare the cutting. Carefully remove the leaves on the stem (which you can now use or preserve it for later), leaving the two smallest leaves on top. Here’s an example of the prepared basil cutting. Now let’s get it to grow some roots!
3. Let them grow some roots
Place your cuttings in a cup of clean water and make sure the stems are submerged. Give your basil lots of sun! I placed mine by the windowsill . Keep the water in the cup clean and fresh.
NOTE: If you’re living in a very cold region, make sure the temperature by your windowsill doesn’t go below 12-13 degree Celsius. I learned this the hard way :0) Exposing your Basil in cold temperature will kill your herb. Put them in warm place and use a lamp or LED Grow Lights to give them the light needed.
4. Plant your basil
After a 1-2 weeks, your cutting will grow its beautiful roots and are now ready to be planted in the soil. Those white roots means it’s very healthy.
Now put potting soil in your pot and moisten the soil with water. Plant your basil cuttings about an inch deep and 6-8 inches apart to give them adequate room for growth. I just poke the soil with my finger and plant the basil cutting 🙂 Water your Basil herbs lightly. I use spray bottle.
Congratulations! Now you know how to easily grow basil indoors! Enjoy your own freshly grown Basil!
To propagate and make your basil bushier, just repeat the steps given above 🙂 I hope you enjoyed this post. Please let me a comment below and let me know how things went with your basil 🙂 Looking forward to hearing from you!
